Visa para viajero

Formally known as a “Temporary Resident Visa” (TRV), this travel document allows foreign nationals to enter and leave Canada. Foreign nationals are split into two categories: those who originate from visa-exempt countries that require an eTA (find out more), and those who are from visa-required countries. Students, workers, and permanent immigrants all need either a visa or an eTA for crossing Canada’s borders.

How to apply?

In most cases, all foreign nationals must apply for visas from outside of Canada. An application can be sent online or by mail to one of the nearest Visa Application Centers (VAC) in your country.

How long can I stay in Canada?

A Visa can be approved for a maximum of ten years or to match the expiry date of your passport. This travel document allows the foreign national to stay in Canada for a period of up to 6 months at a time.

What if I want to stay longer than 6 months, or my visa is going to expire?

Apply for a Visitor Record. You can apply for a Visitor Record within Canada which can extend your 6 month limit; if your visa is going to expire, you can renew it through a Visitor Record application.

Can I travel with my Study or Work Permit?

No. The Work and Study Permits are not Travel Documents. Having a study or work permit does give you valid status in Canada, even if your visa is no longer valid. But it does not give you permission to re-enter Canada. For those who are visa required: when you were issued your work or study permit, a visa was automatically given to you. If this visa has expired and you are planning to temporarily leave Canada and return, you should apply for a visitor record so that you are permitted re-entry into Canada as a worker or student. Please note: an officer makes the final determination at the airport, border or port on whether to allow your entry.

Maintained status

If you apply for a visitor record before your 6 months are up or your visa expires, you can apply for a visitor record. By doing so, your previous Visa remains valid until a decision is made on your visitor record. This is known as maintained status.
